Devarim – 2017

Deut. 1:1 – 3: 22.

The title of this Parsha – ‘Devarim’ – is nestled in the phrase of verse 1 seen as “Eleh hadevarim” – These, the WORDS: The Hebrew is written הדברימ אלה. -Eleh is translated as either a demonstrative pronoun or adjective meaning ‘these’. However, the Alef-Lamed-Hey root also spells oath, to foreswear or put under an oath or covenant. It can also indicate a Terebinth (long-lived) tree, which was often planted as a witness of oath cutting.

When seen this way, the phrase could read: The Long-lived tree shall witness these words: These words shall be a foreswearing, an oath! This puts quite an emphasis on the power and authority of Moshe’s summation of all that YHVH has spoken to Israel! It’s as if Moshe represents a “Long-Lived” tree! He is The Witness – the One Out of Whom the Water/Flows!

Further, there’s a hidden message in the numerical values here: For instance there are 81 letters in the Hebrew verse. 81 is the gematria of H#3677 & H#3678, כסא pronounced ‘kiceh’, a Hebrew word meaning a Full Moon and/or throne! It is also the value of Avodah, a term which means a sacred or priestly service. Now, the full moon was always an Appointed Day, a day for optimum gestation.

Do these words somehow imply a sacred duty at an appointed time reserved for those who would ‘speak these words’? It would seem so! The words elevated the speaker to a higher level. They spoke as if ONE with the originator of the Words!

You literally are standing in the Courtroom / Throne Room to declare your case!

This adds clarity to Ephesians 2: 6 And hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Messiah Yahshua.

This explains Yahshua having been raised from the dead and made to sit at YHVH’s own right hand in ‘heavenly places’. I.E. The Throne and Throne Room of Creation! Therefore, these words rehearsed by Moshe before Israel will elevate Israel to a position of Kingship! *See 2Pet. 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises…

For the time being however, they are on THIS SIDE OF JORDAN – waiting to cross the Jordan, H#3383, ירדנ Yarden – a word literally meaning to descend or go down – yarad, and be judged. It is the lowest river on earth thus it symbolizes humility, the cutting off of the flesh! This humility and subsequent elevation must occur before they can dethrone the enemies of YHVH in the Land!

Moshe the Messiah:

  1. Most scholars acknowledge that YHVH Himself doesn’t speak in the first-person here in Devarim, surmising these to be the ‘words of Moshe’ in rehearsal of all that has been previously declared by YHVH. Yet, Moshe, like Messiah, only speaks the words of YHVH.

He is thus, a type of Messiah who must be “cut off” in the flesh before Israel can enter the Promised Land, just like Yahshua who was cut off allowing Israel to enter the Spiritual Promised Land! Which is why these words are rehearsed on this side of Jordan! The Place where the Flesh dies! Now, you know why Joshua circumcised all Israel immediately upon crossing!

In fact, the gematria of the sentence starting our Parsha (81) is also the value of H# 4139, mulah, meaning circumcision!

Pay attention to the names associated with this particular location:

  • Paran, H#6290, פארנ, it is translated ‘Place of caverns’. Taken from the Pey-Resh root however, it hints at the “Fruit of the Lips” – the Nun attached hints at diminishing.
  • Tophel, H#8603, תפל, Defined as ‘white’, it comes from the same root as taphel, meaning insipid, foolish, to smear
  • Laban, H#3837, לבנ, rendered ‘white’, to purify. *Note the Lamed-Bet root, which spells ‘heart’. The Nun suffix again hints at diminishing.
  • Hazeroth, H#2698, חצרות, translated here as ‘settlement’, it derives from Chatser, meaning to enclose, to blow or sound a trumpet.
  • Dizahab, H#1774, דיזהב, “enough gold”. From Di meaning ‘that, which, etc.’ and zahab meaning gold or to shimmer. However it doesn’t really makes sense until you look at cognates that mean to bring shame and insult.

The Fruit of our lips (when the NUN-Life is diminished) becomes insipid, never pleasing. It diminishes rather than purifies the heart and instead surrounds us with shame and insult!

As an aside, when called upon by YHVH to approach Pharaoh, Moshe responds that his own lips are ‘uncircumcised’ and uses the Hebrew word, H#6189 ערל, arel, meaning uncircumcised, as in, not pruned.

In my opinion, Moshe is not saying that he stuttered, rather, that he was not qualified; not pruned enough to bear the fruit YHVH was looking for – he was a meek and humble man. The word arel is connected to the idea of fruit trees whose fruit cannot be harvested until the tree is considered ‘MATURE’. What would our lives be like if we did not speak until the fruit of our lips was not immature and adolescent?

On a side note, many Rabbinic scholars believe the above locations were not literal geographical landmarks, rather, they represented the specific sins of Israel who complained about ‘dying in the desert’- bamidbar, ‘sexual immorality with the Moabite women’- the Plains or Arabah, their complaints at the Red Sea, the Sin of the Spies (Paran – Kadesh Barnea) Tophel and Laban, (libel and white) when Israel spoke evil against the Manna, Korah’s mutiny (Hazeroth) and Too much gold, the sin of the golden calf – Dizahab.

How apropos that this Parsha occurs during the month of Av – the 5th month of the Hebrew calendar associated with the tribe of Shimon – from Shema – being able to hear and then to obey! Obedience allows no room for complaining, bickering or libelous remarks from the Vassal, as the King requires Fealty.

11-days Journey:

  • It is also worth noting that between the ‘speaking’ of Moshe in 1: 1 – 3, a parenthetical statement is quietly inserted: (There areeleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.) What does this tell us? In English only that Israel could have had a short trek of a few days instead of 40-years. However, the Hebrew reveals quite a bit more…

Excuse me, but how long has your journey been?

Eleven is written: עשר אחד, Echad asar, (10+1). The word Echad translated as ‘one’ can also imply ‘unity or integrity’. While asar, rendered ‘10’ actually comes from the root of Ashar – the root of Y’shar’el – Israel, indicating to go straight! Thus, if Israel had walked in integrity – Unity there was a straight path to the Promised Land! Walked in Unity with whom?

This reminds us of a very familiar, albeit an often-misconstrued verse:

Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed? The word agreed is Ya’ad, meaning to agree, but also hinting at a Divine, intentional appointment! The Hebrew word for except is Biltiy and it means more than ‘except, without, etc.’ It means to be worn out, used up, implying destruction!

Two walking together without an appointment in agreement are mutually destroyed! How many people do you know who have Covenant relationships (supposedly walking in agreement) yet spend their days MAD – MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION!

Presenting a view of that, here Moshe reminds them of an event 40-years prior that took place during the season of this Parsha – the 9th of AV – at the very place they are now camped: Kadeshbarnea! This is an uncommon hybrid word that takes a bit of detective work to get at the true meaning.

It is usually translated simply as “holy” which is [in my opinion] a travesty in Translation! Let’s look at the phrase Barnea – ברנע – that comes from Bet-Resh, meaning Son or Field. The Nun-Ayin root – נע, indicates a vagabond, to wander, sway to and fro, to be unstable.

We could have two definitions here depending on which word is used: Wandering in the Field – desert, or the Son who is a vagabond, unstable! We call ourselves “SONS” yet; our words indict us while our actions prosecute us!

We are not acting like the Firstborn Son of YHVH, rather we become the Vagabond Son – James 1: 8 A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways! One divided in interests: So now we know why we can’t walk together! I have my own agenda, not the interest of the Union!

The word Kadesh is where the translation issue arises! It does not mean holy- kadosh! The vowel points change it from holy to a Male Prostitute or Sodomite – Homosexual! Cain was the first Vagabond wandering in the Land of NOD – Nimrod the second.

The predilection to sexual perversion above is simply to destroy the Seed in order to prevent it from the appointment with the Womb, I.E. the כסא – the full moon of ovulation! 1Pet. 1: 13 wherefore, gird up the loins of your mind…vs. 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

The Mind is the Womb of the soul/spirit! When the enemy approaches with a lying thought, it is literally the Serpent’s Seed! We make the choice to either rebuke him and go to the Tree of Life or remain at the Tree of Carnal knowledge where we allow Satan to seduce us! 2 Cor. 10: 3-6. The last verse tells us: Being ready to punish all disobedience WHEN your obedience if fulfilled!

Ironically, the Greed word here for disobedience G#3876 is parakoe and literally means: a hearing amiss, an unwillingness to hear! Until I’m willing to hear properly and be obedient – I CANNOT EXACT REVENGE AGAINST SATAN IN MY SITUATION! I cannot function as a mature son in my Fathers’ business!

Moshe is literally rehearsing the history of Israel and telling them how to be BORN AGAIN! Literally, how to become the Sons of YHVH! According to Ancient Near Eastern Treaty language The Vassal would literally become the Son of the King when he loved Him and became obedient! Until then, he was merely a conquered servant! When he became insolent, complaining or bickering it was an ACT OF SEDITION AND THEREFORE TREASON AND AN ACT OF WAR!

If you’re having severe issues in your life and cannot rebuke them perhaps you’ve made an enemy of YHVH by your words spoken against Him! Israel did! Your words will identify exactly whose son you are!

In fact, Deuteronomy – Devarim is a perfect example of Ancient Sovereignty Covenant or treaty language:

It has a preamble, a historical prologue, covenantal obligations, blessings and curses and conclusion. It established YHVH as Sovereign King of the Promised Land with Israel acting in His stead as Vassals providing they promised to Love and Obey Him!

Now you understand the discourse between Yahshua and Nicodemus in John 3! No man can serve two masters – the flesh and the spirit.

Kadeshbarnea – Where Our Wandering Starts:

  1. Most Sages acknowledge that it was the tragedy of the 10-spies at this very location that began the 40-years of their journey as Vagabonds! Because of their double-minded view of His Promises! The number 40 is written with the letter MEM – מ – representing the Womb! After Kadeshbarnea an entire generation of ‘SONS’ were aborted – died before taking their rightful place as Vassal Kings in the Promised Land!

Isaiah 1: 18-20.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

The word ‘willing’ above is the Hebrew word Abah, and means to long for, to breathe after. While the word obedient is H#8085 Shama, to hear, understand and obey. The word Abah is related to Alef-Bet, which can mean Father(ed) it can also mean freshness, new growth, to flower or blossom!

The ONE who has heard YHVH and Obeyed HIM has been Fathered! You are a new growth, a new Son! 2cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

You have been BORN AGAIN!

Shabbat Shalom!
